Venue & Schedule

Held in welcoming and relaxed venues, such as Sheffield Cathedral and Kapital Sheffield, these events create a space where players of all abilities can connect face-to-face. There’s no pressure or formality — just the gentle rhythm of chess games, easy conversation, and the comfort of a warm drink in hand. Whether someone is a seasoned player, has just started and wants to learn more, or simply wants a chat, a hot drink, and a cheeky slice of cake, everyone is invited to pull up a chair and join in.

More than just a chess meet-up, Chess, Coffee & Cake is about rediscovering the value of being present. It encourages people to step away from their phones, slow down, and engage with others in a meaningful way. Friendships are formed, ideas are shared, and a sense of community naturally grows around the board.

At its heart, this is a reminder that sometimes the simplest combinations — strategy, conversation, and a little indulgence — can create something genuinely special.

As someone who's not very good at chess, it was great to find such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Everyone was happy to help me learn, and I had a great time playing some of the other board games too.

Attended the Chess, Coffee & Cake group meet for the first time, at the Kapital venue, this past Sunday. It was a really welcoming and relaxed environment to enjoy a game, with a nice coffee, great cake, and free water. There appeared to be a good range of ability levels, as well as ages, and players both male and female. The hosts did a great job making introductions, pairing people up for games, and ensuring there was only a short wait for the coffee and cake! I will definitely be back!

Very friendly setting, had a good coffee and met some wonderful people. Would definitely recommend regardless of how advanced you are in chess as there is always someone willing to teach you.

Our kind hosts will always welcome you in with a smile, introduce you to the team, give you a name badge with your chess confidence level, so you’re pared with similar skilled players; we will also provide you with the slice of cake, and drink of your choice.

in fact we encourage it! It engages their brain and helps the young ones learn something new, off of technology and the XBOX 🙂

We will always aim to cater to as many dietary requirements as possible at every event.
We currently do not have plans to host tournaments as our main goal is to bring people together, off technology, in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere but we will definitely look at this in the future.
We currently have events in Sheffield only, but are branching to Chesterfield and Dronfield soon and other cities soon after that.
